What to do when earthquake hits in your area? Japan is known for earthquake (Jishin). It sits on several different plates, that makes Japan unstable.

Nowadays, people in Japan get notifications or alerts before possible earthquake, thanks to the technical advances.

Here are 5 things you need to know at/after the time of earthquake:

  1. Turn off stove, fire heater, and anything that involves fire and gas.
  2. Go under desk, table. Stay there until tremors are gone. If possible, move in bathroom or other small area with 4 pillars.
  3. Check your family or friends safety near you.
  4. If you are driving, stop the car. If you are on the train, follow train conductor’s instructions. If you are walking on the street, stay away from concrete fence. Find a relatively new, secure building to hide. If you are near ocean, run away to higher ground. If you are in your hotel room, pay attention to hotel announcement and follow the instructions.
  5. Turn on radio, TV and access Twitter and other social media if WIFI or cell phone network is working to get as much information as you can.
  6. Beware there will be aftershocks. Sometimes they are bigger than original tremor.
  7. Transportation will be paralyzed. Keep in mind there will be long lines at gas stations. Also staple food such as bread, milk and butter will be hard to get.
