What is “Fuwa-toro”? Fuwa is short for “fuwa-fuwa” that means “fluffy” in English. It’s a Japanese imitative word. “Tro” is “toro-toro”, literally means “melting in your mouth” in English.
So what are we talking about here with “fuwa-toro” ? It’s a Japanese style pancake and has been popular in Japan for a while. So we decided to check out one of those popular restaurants in Tokyo for the “fuwa-toro” pancake.
“Musashino Mori Coffee” is a part of the big Japanese restaurant group “Skylark”. (https://www.skylark.co.jp/en/mmcoffee/menu/) They specialize in this Fuwa-toro pancake. Musashino means an area in Tokyo outsideof the central Tokyo such as Mitaka, Koganei, Tachikawa, Kokubunji, Fuchu cities. “Mori” means “forest”. So you can see some trees on the exterior and interior of the restaurant.
To be honest with you, I don’t know how they make it so fluffy. According to their website, once an order is placed, they start making a meringue and mix ricotta and cream cheeses. It’s so light! If you go with the conventional idea of pancake, you will be shocked. Because it’s totally a different thing. This pancake does not come with toppings but you can do “add-on” including vanilla ice cream (in this photo), hot chocolate sauce and whip cream.
My partner picked “Roasted nut” pancake. All of their pancakes come with honey-infused maple syrup.
As you can see, they have items other than pancakes. “Chocolate Berry Parfait”. My friend picked this one from the seasonal menu.
Hot Chocolate is a great choice for cold winter but it’s a bit too sweet if you drink with those pancakes.
