Marriott International Signed The Contract With Kyushu Railway For Their First Kyushu Location
Lots of things are going on in Nagasaki, Kyushu. Another big name is opening in the city of Nagasaki.
Kyushu Railway Company and Marriott International have signed a contract to bring “Marriott” brand, which will be the first location in Kyushu region. It’s called “Nagasaki Marriott Hotel“.
Nagasaki has unique culture and history
Nagasaki had a port that was open to foreign countries even when Japan closed to foreign commerce (called “Sakoku”). During that time, it developed its own unique culture which brought out two world heritage sites, “Hidden Christian heritage in Nagasaki and Amakusa Region” and “Industrial revolution heritage of Meiji Japan”.
Some countries were still able to enter Japan during Sakoku
*During Sakoku era, only a few countries were allowed to do business with Japan under some restrictions. One of them is Netherland. Why were they allowed? It has something to do with religion, Christianity. Sakoku was brought in mainly because the then Japan government in Edo era didn’t want the religion to get in the country. Spain and Portugal were Catholic and Netherland was Protestant. The former 2 countries were actively trying to spread Christianity in Japan and Netherland was not. The protestant county simply wanted to make money from doing business with Japan.

The new hotel will be located on the upper floor of the Shin-Nagasaki Station Building, the departure and arrival terminal for the new West Kyushu Shinkansen. The station complex is directly connected to JR Nagasaki Station.
It encompasses 200 guest rooms and suites, an all-day dining restaurant, a specialty restaurant, a lobby lounge, a fitness gym and other attractive facilities. The hotel will open in the fall of 2023.
